A Playful Interpretation
The Willms Residence addition and renovation doubled the existing house that bridged a valley on the banks of the Neuse river in New Bern, NC. The steep hillside once formed part of the earthwork for Revolutionary and Civil War era forts. After we had nearly completed the renovation and addition, we located the original architect, Byron Franklin, who was retired and living nearby. He was thrilled with playful interpretation and expansion of his original work. The solid masonry and custom milled Cyprus wall anchors the addition, provides privacy for the family, and contrasts with both the accordion roof and the long, horizontal span of the bedroom "bridge".
